Syphilis
Syphilis is a sexualy transmitted infection (STI) with the Treponema pallidum bacterium being the etiological agent. The infection might also be transmitted by an infected mother to fetus or at birth. Syphilis patients can exhibit a wide range of symptoms but are most common in the form of skin lesions. The infection can be effectively treated when diagnosed, especially in its early stages.
Syphilis testing
Syphilis testing is done to detect the presence of antibodies produced in people that have the infection. It is an essential part in the clinical diagnosis as it shares symptoms with other diseases. If not treated Syphilis can be the cause of heart ailments, brain and spinal cord damage, blindness and even death.
Syphilis testing is advised when a person:
- Is sexually active and has a rash or sore in the genital area
- Has symptoms that are nonspecific and resemble those of Syphilis
- Is being treated for another sexualy transmitted disease
- Has an HIV infection
- Has a partner that has been infected by Syphilis
- Has engaged in high risk sexual activity
